Name: Melissa Wenzel
What town do you live in now: Holly Springs
Where are you originally from: Montoursville, Pennsylvania
When did you start running: I started running in high school in Track and Cross Country.
Why did you start running: Well, I wanted to participate in a sport in high school and I wasn’t too keen on softball, tennis, or cheerleading. I thought running would be fun.
What is your running shoe of choice: Saucony Kinvara 7
What is your favorite running accessory (you don’t leave home without it): I do not leave home without my Garmin and my phone(for music).
What race are you currently training for: My first official marathon will be in December at Kiawah. I am running the Too Slow for Boston at Womble in April. This will be a test to see if I can actually run that far and survive… 🙂 Of course, I will run the HSHM in November!
How many days a week do you run: I usually run between 3-5 days a week
How many miles a week do you run: I run anywhere from 10-20 miles a week.
What time of day do you like to run: I run in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings.. I enjoy any time of day really.
What is your favorite type of training run (speedwork, hills, tempo, long, easy, etc): I enjoy running long runs with some hills.
What was your most frustrating running related injury: When I ran track in high school, I sprinted the 100 and 200. I had painful shin splints. I would literally fall down after crossing the finish line. I am probably going to jinx myself saying this but…. That is the only running related injury that I can recall…. *knock on wood*
If you could run any race which one would you choose: I would like to run the Rock ‘n Roll half in Brooklyn, Philly, VA Beach, and Savannah. Rock ‘n Roll Raleigh was my very first half and I think it would be cool to do a series of them within a year:). I also wouldn’t mind running a race in Hawaii…. 🙂 🙂
What is your favorite distance in a race: Even though I have only ran one officially, I think my favorite distance in a race would be a 10K.
What is your favorite race: My favorite race is the Myrtle Beach Mini. It was in October. The weather was perfect. Running company was awesome(Aaron and Davis). It was ALL flat, with the exception of a little hump in the road. The atmosphere was energetic and people cheering all over the place. It was exceptionally cool when so many runners would run by us or vice versa saying “thank you”, “Go Davis”, “you guys are amazing”, “great job guys” etc… AND I had a PR for a half!
What was your worst race: I really think my worst race was Tobacco Road Half last March. It was humid. I was told it was all flat. So mentally, I wasn’t prepared for the road with hills at the beginning and the end. My fingers started swelling up about mile 8. The view was kinda boring(in my opinion). However, there is a little part of me debating doing it again…
What is your biggest running accomplishment: My biggest running accomplishment is finishing 13.1 in Raleigh in JUNE pushing Brandon with Aaron and Norm. It wasn’t pretty. There were lots of tears. It was HOT. It was HUMID. I felt like I disappointed the guys. BUT they never lost sight of me. It was ALL worth it in the end. That last part of the race with all three of us pushing Brandon to the finish line and helping him walk across it was so inspirational. After that race, I told myself I would not let humidity defeat me! I changed the way I hydrate and I got stronger running through the rest of the summer months. ** Someday, I would like to push Brandon with Aaron and Norm in another race…BUT not a June race:)
